The ACM 2003 A.M. Turing Award was presented to Dr. Alan Kay, for leading the team that invented Smalltalk (the programming language). The Turing Award is considered the "Nobel Prize of Computing". Previous winners of this award include Ronald L. Rivest, Adi Shamir and Leonard M. Adleman (2002), Frederick P. Brooks (1999), Niklaus Wirth (1984) and E.W. Dijkstra (1972).
Kay's work also laid the intellectual foundations for today's graphical user interfaces. Besides being known for the invention of Smalltalk, Alan Kay is also known for his dislike of a certain programming language. ("I invented the term Object-Oriented, and I can tell you I did not have C++ in mind."). Personally I consider Smalltalk as one of the most elegant programming languages ever invented.
Congratulations!
